Who’da thunk? Who would have thought our linebackers would score more touchdowns than our wide receivers? I guarantee you no one would have thought of this in a million years. But it happened. And we beat the Minnesota Vikings in a wild, see-saw, almost-debacle.
LaMarr Woodley gave James Harrison his comeuppance by scoring a touchdown off a Viking fumble. And always-ready, always-steady Keyaron Fox, playing for injured Lawrence Timmons, scored his first-ever touchdown in his six year career with a Brett Favre interception.
Among and around these two scores, however, came plenty of cardiac difficulty.
The respectable 69 yards attained by Rashard Mendenhall against a stout Minnesota front four was unfortunately negated by the inexplicable leap/fumble inside the Viking five-yard line.
Whether our offensive play calling came from Big Ben or Bruce Arians or both, I don’t know; what I do know is that it was truly offensive. We played in a box all day. I don’t care if our receivers were covered deep. Open it up and give our ground game a chance. Which we did not do today.
Despite the resurgence of our defense, we still should not have allowed Brett Favre to pick up 334 yards passing. I’ll beat this into the ground…I do not like the weak spots we show underneath. It never ceases to amaze me how our cornerbacks give so much space to the wide receivers off the line. That will put nails in our coffin quicker than anything else the Steelers D does.
Adrian Peterson is as tough as they come, all 217lbs of him. Just ask Willie Gay, who was pancaked by Peterson in one of the Viking’s final drives. I imagine, however, it was either fate or stupidity by the Viking’s offensive coordinator that they did not continue to give the ball to Peterson, with the success he was having late in the game.
Jeff Reed, while nailing a couple good ones, needs to retake Tackling 101, along with How to Act in Public Around Cops 101.
I’m not usually one to gripe about the lack of accurate officiating, sometimes even when it comes against the Steelers. Today, however, the zebra boys needed to go back to the zoo.
A lot of good came out of this game. We beat a previously undefeated NFC team in our house. We did not hear too much from the Williams boys or Jared Allen, which again shows our O-Line is becoming more stalwart each week. And we are taking these positives into the bye-week.
According to Mike Tomlin in his post-game interview, however, it will not be a bye-week in the film room or the practice facility.
